Fishing with Zach, Susquehanna River 09/06/09

It took just one day off the river and a ton of home and yard work to get me itching to be back on the water again. I had a feeling that I wouldn't last too long away from the river during this magnificent stretch of beautiful late summer days. :)

My son had already fallen asleep last evening when I made the decision to go fishing today. So, I packed a few items to eat and drink and placed them all in the refrig for the morning. Mom has been working the entire weekend and rises at 5:00 a.m. When we awoke this morning, she went to my son's room and asked him if he wanted to go to the river with me... "Yep!"

Now that he has his license, he has come out with me three times in the past two weeks... Cool. Last year, I believe we were only on the water once all summer long.

We got to the ramp around 7:00 a.m. and I got to speak to a local fellow who runs a Mastercraft Ski Boat. I see him quite often at the ramp early in the morning. He told me that they were attempting a world record today... Really!? They had 14 barefoot skiers arriving before the ramp got too busy in order to attempt breaking the record. The previous record was 12. I need to see if it shows on our local news. He claimed they were coming to document the event through WGAL Television.

Zach and I arrived at our first fishing spot around 7:30 a.m. We tossed a lipless crankbait (Zach) and a spinnerbait (dad). Although, most of this past week my spinnerbait bite has been off, I was able to get three to hit rather quickly in swift moving water. It didn't take Zach too long to tie on a spinnerbait and he immediately starting catching fish. Here are three of his 15+" bass on the spinnerbait:

15.5" Smallie... First bite! (check out that smile!)

His next bass had shoulder pads on and measured in at 16"

His biggest bass came using the same lure and technique. He was throwing cross current and allowing the spinnerbait to make a sweep as he was retrieving it. This was the results... a 17 1/8th inch smallie!

Look at that smile!

As we moved in and around the boulders of the rock garden, Zach called out to me, "I'm hung up. Dang!" As we moved the boat towards the "hang up", the line started to move. What!?
Here's what was hooked on the other end... (25", 5+lb)

Zach wanted to be sure to get a pic of dear ole dad with a legal fish during our Labor Day Weekend Outing. So the next 15+" fish I caught, he grabbed the camera and clicked off a pic.

Once again... "The Ugly Lure" (Dell Jackson) :p

I saw a Inboard Tracker today and wasn't sure if it was Tracker 120 or not. We didn't get close enough to talk.

Air temp was 57 when we arrived and rose to 75 degrees. The water temp was 70.5 degrees throughout the morning. A bit warmer in the lakes b/w the dam then up north on Friday. We had a cool ESE breeze around 5 -10 mph, but I could tell the breeze was sucking a bit of humidity up from the south.

As the morning progressed, we started to get some cloud cover which stayed with us after we trailered the boat.

This has been a gorgeous holiday weekend. I hope everyone has been able to gather family and friends closely around them and enjoy this last summer holiday... The last hurrah! :D
