That wasn't the way this dad started. I was introduced by my buddies as I grew up in suburban Lancaster, Pa. This blog will chronicle my activities as a dad to three adult sons and of course, my fishing adventures. I hope you enjoy and visit often. - daddadTBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01432516209408960063noreply@blogger.comBlogger642125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2601396230790890761.post-32808381872687557092016-03-18T01:29:00.001-04:002016-03-18T01:29:12.895-04:00Final PostHello Folks,

Yes, it has been several months since my last post and I'm sorry for just letting you hang.

But I have been keeping track of my fishing buddies on Facebook and they are actively fishing on the Susquehanna River and catching nice size early-Spring smallmouth bass.

As you can tell, I have loved writing "Fishing With Dad" over the years. This, however, will be my last post.

I was able to take a trike ride this past week before I went into the health campus to get my MRI on Friday evening. I received the MRI copy today but have yet to hear from Dr. Marotti's office regarding what the plan is as a follow-up to this MRI.

I will continue to keep you updated as I hear more news.

p.s. I picked up a "Nutcase Helmet" in Black Matte (L) off of Amazon, a pair of warm bicycle ear muffs from Nutcase, and a bicycle tool kit. I had an Alien II bicycle tool kit when I bought my SUN bicycle, but I must have forgotten to remove it from my bike or carrying case when I sold it (Dang!)... The one I just bought off of Amazon was retailed priced at $50.00 and I picked it up on a great sale for only $10.00... The reduced price took a bit of the sting out of not finding my last tool kit.

I also got into the "Susquehanna Fishing Tackle" shop yesterday and picked up two "Chatter Baits (Elites)" and some "Innovations - Little Dipper" trailers with the $25 Christmas (2014) gift certificate from my middle brother, Jim.dadTBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01432516209408960063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2601396230790890761.post-69819269943605895812015-10-25T19:41:00.001-04:002015-10-25T19:41:32.607-04:00Upcoming Spinal MRIHello Folks,

It has been over a month since I last wrote to "Fishing With Dad". I have been trying to exercise the best I can with my Catrike Villager Trike on the river trails along the Susquehanna River. I last rode this past Wednesday on the Northwest Trail from the Riverfront Park Boat Launch off of Rt. 441 to Decateur Street, Marietta, Pa. The round trip took about 5.5 miles in just under an hour. Afterward, I was extremely sore in my left replaced knee and I developed an acute sciatic back pain on my drive home that ran down into my right leg... "Enough is Enough!"

I arranged an appointment with my spinal surgeon, Dr. Louis Marotti. Dr. Marotti did the fusion on my L5(6)S1 back in 2013. I had instant relief and was pleased with the work that he had done. Over the past few months, thing have deteriorated. So this past Friday, I visited with Dr. Marotti and he arranged for an update MRI (with and without contrast) for my lower lumbar at the MRI Group on the Lancaster General Health Pavilion/Campus. This will take place on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. I have to be there by 6:30 p.m. to complete my paperwork. an MRI usually takes about 40 - 45 minutes long.

I want to thank all my fishing buddies for all they have personally done for me over the past years. But I truly think my days of fishing are over...

I will keep "Fishing With Dad" updated on my MRI results and what the good doctor wants to do as a follow-up to the MRI. He mentioned possibly more physical therapy or epidural spinal injections. If my spine has deteriorated above and /or below the fusion site, he may want to increase the fusion... I trust his opinion and hope for the best results.

As you have noticed, my fishing days have dropped significantly since I sold my G3 1860 DLX with the Yamaha 115/80 mod-V boat this past March. Since then, I have picked up my physical activity by peddling my recumbent Catrike trike. I have been riding on the Susquehanna River Trail at the Enola Low Grade Trail and the Northwest Trail between Marietta and Bainbridge, Pa.

On Saturday, September 12, 2015, a group of us peddled (bicycles and trikes) from Rohrerstown, Pa. to the Lancaster (Pa.) Square... a 7.2 mile round-trip. We left from the "Recumbent Cycles of Lancaster" at 10:00 a.m. and returned by noon. We had a registration period in the morning and food available for us upon our return... Thanks to Scott Barrows and his wife for setting this up this ride.

It was the first time I peddled my trike on the city streets. The river trail doesn't have many grades to it, but city streets do. I started the ride towards the front and ended by in the rear... LOL! I basically peddle with my strong right leg and my replaced knee leg (left) follows along. I am peddling with one leg... Not bad for a 60 year old kid. :)

Mike King was involved in a motorcycle accident over thirty years ago and after recovery, he pushed his wheelchair from Fairbanks, Alaska to Washington, D.C. During his ride, he passed through the city of Lancaster along the route that we took during our recent ride... This was the "30th Anniversary" of his ride...

We are currently doing a "Virtual Ride" following Mike's route from Fairbanks, Alaska to Washington, D.C. and back... A donor recently stepped in and offered a $1.00 per mile for our return trip up to $5,000... What a nice move on their part. We have already passed by Chicago on our return back to Fairbanks.

Things have been rather difficult on me this past summer... I am doing my best to stay positive as I continue to stay healthy despite all that I am dealing with physically. I recently was offered to participate in a study involving N.A.S.H. Cirrhosis at the Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, Md. but I decided against it because of the amount of time involved and it is a blind study. Which means that I could put a year's worth of time into the study without ever receiving the medication intended to improve my condition... It wasn't an easy decision, but I feel I made the correct one for me and my family.

I have fished only twice since my last report. A few weeks ago, I took a very short trip with my good buddy, Dell Jackson. We launched from the Columbia ramp when the river was reading only 3.8' at the Harrisburg, Pa. gauge. Under these conditions, the water level at Columbia is low over the ledges and we scraped a few times when we went south over the main ledge into the rock garden.

The wind was blowing rather hard from the northwest and, along with the current, made it a bit difficult to see and run his trolling motor... The TM was toast after about half hour! We caught two smallmouth bass in less than thirty minutes and I felt had we been able to keep his trolling motor running, we may have had a pretty decent evening of fishing.

When the trolling motor dies on us, we headed back to the Columbia docks and checked out the 24 volt system's batteries. We found that one of the positive terminals was loose. This may have been the reason we lost power so quickly... It was tight enough to run, but the charge may not have been good from the night before... Oh well, we'll get 'em the next time, Dell.

This past Sunday, I met up with Josh at his home at 4:30 a.m. and we headed to the Mt. Joy Diner for an early breakfast... Cream Chip Beef with homefries taste awful good at that time of the morning! After breakfast, we headed up river and launched just below Harrisburg, Pa. The water temp was in the 70s and the air temperature was brisk 58 degrees... What a Beautiful Morning!

I caught a quick bass on a Black Neon colored tube and then Josh took over with several on his green pumpkin Chatterbait and trailer. The Chatterbait was the ticket... Even I caught one on a borrowed Chatterbait from Josh. I only had a white Chatterbait and the fish seemed to be attracted to green pumpkin... Slow rolled on the bottom.

I had tossed Chatterbaits for largemouth several years ago, but this was my first smallmouth bass on a Chatterbait. I was slow rolling it back to the boat and as I was winding my line up to the boat, I hesitated to talk with Josh. At the moment of stop and go, a bass was triggered to hit my lure.

We also tried some topwaters without success... A Sammy and a Buzzbait. Josh also tossed a plastic stickbait without a hit. We both tossed spinnerbaits, too.

Overall, it was a slow day and we probably only caught about twelve bass in six hours we were on the water.

Steve Halbleib and his partner were fishing further south than we were and had a slightly better day than we had by tossing spinnerbaits... I know there was one point in the day that Josh told me that Steve had contacted him and said he had about fourteen fish by himself... Good job, guys!

The river level at Harrisburg was 3.85' and the water was stained from the rain we had a few days earlier. Josh said that he and Steve were out on Saturday and caught over twenty bass. The water clarity was a bit better than what we faced on Sunday... But, that's okay. I think that fishing under tough conditions often makes one more patient and a better angler overall. One must have diversity in order to figure out what the smallies want under those conditions... And no matter what one throws on certain days, it can just be plain hard to catch a fish under certain circumstances.

Our Susquehanna River can be so forgiving and plentiful at times that we can become spoiled rather easily...

Thanks to Josh for offering me a trip in his Rock Proof boat with a Yamaha 115/80 jet drive... She's a beaut!

It has been quite some time since I last posted a fishing report. To tell you the truth, I have only been fishing three times since I sold my G3...

This past July 4th, Josh Kreider asked me if I wanted to go fishing. I jumped at the chance despite the fact that it was suppose to poured all day long... LOL!

We headed to breakfast at the Mt. Joy Diner and then to the Juniata River for a great day of smallmouth angling... We caught over 54 bass throughout the day. Our largest was a 19 7/8th" smallie and a lot of 18-19" smallmouth, also.

So, sit back and enjoy some of the pics we took during the pouring rain...
I hope you enjoyed eyeing-up these beauties. The Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers have been on fire over the past month. Many anglers are catching their "personal best" over the past three weeks. So, if you get a chance to head out to the river for some smallmouth action, don't hesitate to take the opportunity.

The rivers have been filled with water and, in fact, the predictor gauges are suggesting that the Susquehanna River at the Harrisburg, Pa. gauge will be rising to 6.7' which is very rare for this time of the summer.
(05/08/15)Hello Folks,

This may be a little bit off of my typical "fishing blog" entry, but my life has been improved greatly by music. I wonder how many of my "Fishing With Dad", FB Family, and Friends knew or remember Micky Sinopoli?

Micky Sinopoli introduced me to the joy of playing the accordion many, many years ago. Mickey was known as the premier accordion player in Lancaster, Pa. My two older brothers, Denny and Jim, also started their music adventures with the accordion and Mickey. I still remember wanting to play the piano, but our family couldn't afford a standup piano. If only we would have had "electronic keyboards" like we do in today's world, I may have never been introduced to the accordion and Micky Sinopoli.

I moved on to playing trombone in third/fourth grade (?) with Mr. Bromhall. I attended Burrowes Elementary School in Lancaster Township, Pa. during that time and would take a bus to Buchanan Elementary School once a week for band practice... We had a weekly lesson at Burrowes, also. I continued with trombone in Lancaster Township Junior High and on to J.P. McCaskey with Mr. Don Trostle. My weekly lessons continued with Mr. Trostle during high school.

After college, I picked up the trombone again and played with "The Sound of Roses" for awhile until I studied the bass and six-string guitar with Joe Goff. I also had guitar lessons with Bill and later with Trey Alexander at the Music Mansion off of Rt. 999. Back in the 1980's I took keyboard lessons from Gaye (Albright) Mentzer. I eventually began to play a keyboard with both hands... LOL!

I have always considered myself a lucky soul to have had such a great list of music instructors throughout my life... Learning to play a musical instrument(s) has been a joy and I would highly recommend it to anyone no matter what age or personal ability.

I got a call this past week from my very good friend, Dell Jackson. Dell and I used to work together at both Marticville and Manor Middle Schools in the Penn Manor School District. Dell is currently a seventh grade math teacher for Penn Manor and has one more year to serve until he retires. As for me, I have been retired as a guidance counselor for the past nine years... Wow! It doesn't seem that long...

Dell had a new aluminum boot placed on his jet motor and also had his bench seat reconditioned by the woman who does work for Lakeside Marine. The seat covers looked very nice. I also noticed that Dell had a new trolling motor mounted since we were last out fishing together. He has a new "used" 70 lb thrust Minn Kota with five speeds. It ran well in the current for the size boat he runs.

We decided to head to Columbia, Pa. and fish in and around the Rt. 462 Bridge and the west shoreline... The weather was beautiful! The air temperature was in the low-70s and the water temperature was 53 degrees and clear. The water level has been dropping over the past four days since I fished with Josh Kreider on Sunday.

We hit the water around 4:30 p.m. and fished until 7:00 p.m. We caught a couple of fish, including Dell's small walleye...

We tossed Mouse colored War Eagles, tubes, and clear white grubs throughout our trip. We nailed one smallie on a spinnerbait and the rest came on soft plastics.

Walleye Season opens this coming Saturday, May 2, 2015. Walleye limit is six fish at 15" and above... This is a good time for Dell since he loves hunting for Spring Gobbler which opens in Pennsylvania this coming Saturday. Dell is heading to his cabin on the North Branch of the Susquehanna River after school on Friday and he's towing his boat north for some walleye fishing. He should have a great three days up north this coming Friday thru Monday. The weatherman is calling for great weather.

Dell's boat ran well for it's first outing of the season. It took a bit to get the winterization fluids through it's carbs, but once we ran the boat for a few minutes, it ran well even against the current.

There were about five other boats out and fishing the area we were hanging in. Several had launched from the Columbia Ramp and a few others came out of the Wrightsville Ramp. There were even several recreational kayakers out on the west shoreline for a relaxing evening paddle.

Thanks to Dell for asking me out last evening. We had a great time catching up since we last fished together... Good luck up on the North Branch this weekend, buddy! I know that you cannot hunt for turkey since you are still recovering from your replaced right shoulder. But you did an excellent job casting that new baitcaster you got for Christmas. The new St. Croix Mojo Rod is also a beauty... Keep practicing with it and you'll become a pro in no time!

This past weekend, Josh invited me on my first fishing trip on his brand new "Rock Proof Boat"... We are still thinking of an appropriate name to call this beast... Joe Raymond's 250 Hp Merc IB "Rock Proof" is called "Rockzilla" (Radical!) which is a great name for his monster rig. Now Joe is building a second rig with a 200 Hp Merc... We can't wait to see how this one turns out.

The water temperature was running about 57.7 degrees most of the trip. When we ran closer to the Dock Street Dam, the water in mid-river dropped to 52 degrees. The river was a bit dirty, but not too bad that one could still toss a jerkbait and see it well enough in the water. Most of our fish came on plastic tubes in an assortment of colors.

Josh was preparing for a NASS Club Tournament on the next day, Sunday... Our goal was to stay away from any areas that he knew he wanted to fish during the very next day. So we hit about three or four spots and spent most of our time concentrating on a variety of lures. The biggest fish we caught was a 17.25" on a Cabin Creek Smoke Purple tube...
I believe that 20 lbs was brought in by Fred of NASS on Sunday and that topped the scales for first place.
John William's UHMW Poly...
This past weekend, John Williams sent me a few pictures of his UHMW poly process for the bottom of aluminum jet rigs. John has done his own boat a few years ago and will now be developing a business of adding UHMW poly on the bottom of rigs. This is a time consuming job that requires the motor to be removed and the gas tanks drained.

John has, what one might refer to as, a rotisserie set up for the jet rigs... Check out some of the pics he sent me this weekend. The beginning process is to upload the jet rig and prepare the aluminum rig by sanding the bottom and preparing for the "glue and screw" process... Great looking job, John. John also has added the ribs and keel line for better control...

In the near future, John will create his own website to advertize his work and a blog to discuss the process... Please keep an eye out for his upcoming work!
I would encourage anyone who expresses an interest in adding the UHMW poly to the bottom of your jet rig to contact John Williams in the near future for pricing and dates for work... I believe he is looking towards June 2015 as a period to start up his business...

It has been several weeks since I last owned my G3 1860 DLX . With the help of JC Nuss at Lakeside Marine, all the paperwork was accomplished on a very sad day for us all. I have had a couple of down years and it was probably the best move for me overall. I was also able to help my son buy a new Re-Curve Bow and Limbs to advance his archery skills. Zach was able to shoot in an archery league with his Compound Bow this past winter and really, really enjoyed it. During the season, he became interested in the Re-Curve Bows that are used in the Olympics and met a couple of very talented female archers that were trained at the Olympic Training Center.

Once his limbs arrive at the "Lancaster Archery Supply", he will set up lessons and begin planning for the next league.

I also have arranged for my Borla Cat-Back Black Tipped exhaust system with a cold air intake and tuning to be done on the Mustang during the week of April 13, 2015 by "Brady's High Performance" on Millwood Rd, Willow Street, Pa. Brady installed my Borla Exhaust System in my F-150 back in 2006 and I was very pleased with his work and the performance I received from the 2005 F-150.

I suspect that I will gain approximately and additional 20-25 hp on my 2015 50th Anniversary Mustang with this upcoming work. We joked about supercharging the Mustang to 627 hp... Wow, what a "mean machine" that would be. A Edlebrock supercharger would run about $7500. Brady likes these systems better than the Roush. He told me that when you get on the Roush once or twice and it heats up, the system tends to lose a bit of hp at the steering wheel. The Edlebrocks don't seem to perform the same and are more suited for the higher end performance... I trust Brady and his team at "High Performance".

The other week, I took the Mustang to Keller Brothers in Lititz, Pa. to have a little bit of touch up paint done after I scratched a couple of spots on the hood near the passenger windshield wiper. I also had a nick on the rear passenger side plastic bumper that happened during a drive... Their Touch Up Man did an excellent job and I am very pleased with his work. I wouldn't hesitate taking the Mustang back to him for work in the future.

HAPPY EASTER 2015 - To my family and friends...

I got to see "Furious 7" on Friday and really enjoyed the story line. It was, by my opinion, the best of all seven. I will miss Paul Walker and his character. They did a very nice tribute to him at the end of the movie... "For Paul".

It has been a long time since I last posted a blog entry here at "Fishing With Dad" and I have really missed all the fishing action... I have even been bouncing around the idea of selling my G3 1860 DLX... Yes, but I am not certain that I want to do this big move. Oh well, I guess I will make my decision by March 2015.

My good fishing partner, Josh Kreider, has his new "Rock Proof Boat" now in hand. All that he needs to do is add the trolling motor and electronics. It should be ready to go by this coming weekend... And there are areas of the river available to fish upon.

Here are several pictures of his new "Rock Proof Boat"...

Isn't she a beaut! I teased Josh that everyone who he knows now wants to go fishing with him even non-fishermen... His Facebook page has been buzzing with excitement with those asking questions about his new jet rig. I can remember how exciting it was when I built the "Barge II" back in 2001... I was able to get everything I ever wanted built into that rig. It ran over $20,000 and that was 13 years ago... A boat like mine would sell for well over $25,000 today according to JC Nuss at Lakeside Marine in Harrisburg, Pa.

Josh told me that he will have his rig on the water by this coming weekend... Looking forward to it!

On Saturday, March 14, 2015, Herschel Finch, a good friend from Virginia, will be traveling to Lancaster, Pa. to bring his wife to the "Quilting Convention" in Lancaster. Julie and I are getting our taxes done early on Saturday morning and once I return Julie home, I will be meeting Herschel at the "Susquehanna Fishing Tackle" shop.

It's been quite a few years since I've last seen Herschel. We used to do a lot of kayak fishing together back before I had my hand/wrist and elbow surgeries. I am now looking forward to seeing him once again... As long as all goes well and they make the trip north.

Please keep my wife, Julie, in your prayers as she continues to heal from the fall she took back on Sunday January 15, 2014. She had two plates placed in her right lower leg that Sunday... One plate on each bone in her shin. She currently is wearing a purple cast and walking with a "Knee Walker/Scooter". Julie cannot place any of her weight on her right leg for at least six weeks and it could take up to six months to completely heal. That is an awfully long time to be tied up. I hope that she'll be able to use the swimming pool during the hotter months for her rehabilitation.

I have been currently caring for the household... Shopping, groceries, laundry, and all meals. She can still get to the computer to keep our finances in order.. Thank goodness! She will not be able to drive until she can place pressure on her right leg... This may be quite some time until she can get behind the wheel of our car/truck again.

Tomorrow, after PT, I will be heading north to Keller Brothers Ford of Lititz, Pa. A couple of weeks ago, I was removing ice from the front windshield of the new Mustang and I scraped the paint along the edge of the front hood... UGH! I was so upset with myself. So, tomorrow, they will tell me what we will need to do to correct this problem. We do have insurance to cover any dings, scratches, or dents... We took this special insurance out the very day we bought the vehicle just for things like this! I am hoping that they can make my Mustang like new again... Please, God! :)

Spring is coming soon. Trout are being stocked in over 23 streams and one lake here locally. The ice on the river is slowly breaking up and the river is on a slow rise... This slow thaw is perfect for not allowing flooding to occur.

I cannot wait to get back on the water for my 54th year of fishing! Spring and Fall are my two favorite times to go fishing... Although, I will fish anytime, anywhere!

This past Saturday (Feb. 7), I gathered up my outdoor show materials and headed up to the Harrisburg Mall to catch the free bus shuttle over to "The NRA Great American Outdoor Show 2015". When I arrived at the Marclay Avenue Entrance, I phoned JC Nuss of Lakeside Marine to come to the entrance to meet me. He brought my Exhibitor's Pass along and I got into the show to start my day in helping "Lakeside Marine" of Harrisburg.

We had a great crowd for the first day of events. I took a short walk towards afternoon to meet Jason Shay. Jason is a guide for the Ken Penrod "Life Outdoors Unlimited". There were several guides present at the show to meet with potential customers and arrange guide services for the upcoming year.

JC and Barb Nuss were present at the "Lakeside Marine" display. Dan Griffin of Jet Wing, LLC was also present at "Lakeside Marine" Booth #2022 in the Fishing Boat Hall.

This show present the opportunities for individuals who are interested in kicking a few tires and viewing the eleven boats in our display area. The boats are at "Boat Sale Prices" and these will run until the "Open House" in March 19 - 21, 2015.

If you stop by the "Lakeside Marine" display, you will be able to pick up a sales paper and a listing of all used boats on the lot.

I will be returning to the show tomorrow morning around 10:30 a.m. I am starting PT once again at "Drayer PT" at 8:00 a.m. in the morning. I will be working on my replaced left knee once again. I have a goal in mind for this coming Spring 2015. In an earlier post on "Fishing With Dad", I had mentioned that I bought a new Sun Bicycle. My goal is to be competent enough to ride that bicycle by this coming Spring. In order to do so, I will need to improve my extension and flexion and bit more so that I will be able to fully peddle the bicycle. I can now peddle the recumbent bicycle because of it's setup. The normal two-wheeled bicycle must be set a bit higher than normal for me to be able to get my replaced left knee around in a full peddle... I am hoping for major improvement through the PT so I can meet my goal.

So, if you visit the "Great American Outdoor Show" , stop on by and say "Hello!"

It's been a month since my last post and Octorara Orphie said Spring is arriving in four weeks, but Punxsutawney Phil and many others saw their shadows and declared that Winter will last another six weeks...

Now, the real question is... "When will Josh Kreider receive his Rock Proof boat?" The facts are... It is now painted and the 2015 Yamaha 115/80 has been mounted on the hull. I'm predicting two more weeks until he picks up the finished product.

Keep in mind, folks, that I plan to be working with "Lakeside Marine" at the "NRA Outdoor Show" at the Harrisburg Farm Show Arena... February 7 (Saturday) thru February 15 (Sunday), 2015.

Please stop by and say "Hi!" To JC and Barb Nuss. As long as the weather holds up, I will determine how many days or which days I'll be at the "Lakeside Marine" display, Booth #2022.
P.S. I saw that Susquehanna River bass guide, Jason Shay, has posted on Facebook that he will be assisting at the "Ken Penrod Outdoors Life Unlimited" Booth #2620. I am sure he would appreciate a visit from everyone.dadTBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01432516209408960063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2601396230790890761.post-27940428501962905532015-01-05T14:55:00.001-05:002015-01-05T14:55:31.442-05:00First Trip of 2015 with Josh Kreider and Dad (01/05/15)Hello Folks,

Although it was our first fishing trip of the year 2015, it was the last trip for Josh's 1860 DLX G3... Yepper, Josh is writing yet another chapter in his boat ownership book! In the past few months, I've been keeping you updated as bloggers on Josh's "Rock Proof Boat" being built by Brent Kaufman.

After fishing on Friday, January 2, 2015 out of Amity Hall on the Juniata River, we made a quick visit over to "Rock Proof Boat" . The air temperature was quite cold at 28 degrees and the river temperature ran from 32.7 to 34 degrees. Not only had the river temperature dropped nearly ten degrees over the past week, but it also has dropped considerably on the Juniata River. We only caught a few quillbacks using 1/8th oz. black and blue hairjigs...

Boy... I look awful tired with those bags under my eyes. It was my first trip using the new red jacket. My old white jacket had finally worn itself out over the years. In fact, the waterproofing outer shell was chipping away... It was a very useful jacket, but I was concerned that I would get awfully wet if it happened to rain while out on a cold wintery day.

Josh had a few other hits and misses, but we weren't sure if they were other quillbacks or smallmouth bass. This area had been productive prior to the temperature and water level drop.

This next picture shows Dad "trailering" Josh's G3 for the very last time. Josh had just backed the G3 Bear Trailer down the Amity Hall ramp using his brand new 2014 Dodge Ram truck... The new Dodge Ram is a beautiful glossy black.
After our cold trip on the Juniata River, we took a nice warm drive to "Rock Proof Boats" to visit with Brent Kaufman and see Josh's new jet rig. The primer is now on and they are awaiting the arrival of his glossy black paint ... Josh's "Rock Proof Boat" and his new Dodge Ram will definitely be a matching set... :)
Check out some of the pictures of what has been done to the "Rock Proof Boat" as of January 2, 2015...
The 2015 Yamaha 115/80 should be ready to be mounted in the next two weeks. Josh will be contacting JC Nuss at Lakeside Marine this week to let him know that the motor and cables needs to be ready for his rig... I can just imagine how excited Josh is right now. On the way home, he said that he can't wait to have that beautiful "Rock Proof Boat" sitting in his garage... We joked that the rivers will all be frozen just when his boat is completed... LOL!
p.s. Please keep the missing 17 year old and his family in your prayers. He has been missing since December 2, 2014. He has gone missing now for the past 35 days. The rescue crews attempted to re-enact what happened on the day that he went missing. They are surely concerned about the river freezing over this coming week. Weather reports are predicting 1" to 3" of snow tomorrow. Anyone fishing or hunting along the Susquehanna River from the New Cumberland launch south, please keep an eye peeled for any clues that may help rescue crews determine his whereabouts. dadTBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01432516209408960063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2601396230790890761.post-75931673623445398402014-12-29T16:41:00.002-05:002014-12-29T20:12:00.570-05:00Josh, "Squirrel'", and David's River Adventures (12/29/14)Hello Folks,

I hope you all survived your busy Christmas Holiday... We had a ton of fun visiting the neighbors on Christmas Eve and my niece, Chelsea, and her mom, Deanna on Christmas Day. We gathered at my middle brother's (Jim) home on Christmas Morning for the opening of family gifts and then we ate a traditional ham dinner around 1;00 p.m..

Afterwards, my oldest son, Chris, and his family traveled to our home so that my beautiful granddaughters could open their gifts that Santa dropped off at our home. We had a great time gathering as a family and then Julie and I walked to Deanna and Chelsea's condo which is located just behind our home at Summerfield.

This past weekend, my old fishing partner, Josh Kreider and his new found fishing partners, David Ace and "Squirrel", hit the Juniata River for two days of fishing after cold water smallmouth bass. Josh sent me some great pics of their outings on Saturday and I stole two of David's "Pigbeast" from Monday's outing...

So, sit back and take a gander at these great pics and enjoy...
Those of us who own a Golden Rule Measuring Board know that they measure up to 23+ inches... You can tell that this bass was well over 21" by it's location on this measuring tool.

Josh wrote and told me that the black and blue hair jig was a very productive lure for the day.He also caught some on the Silver Buddy... Pretty cool grouping of fish over the past two days, Josh, Squirrel, and David!

Here was a post I placed on Facebook the other day. I went and bought a medium priced "Sun" bicycle and had it rigged by Tom Pod at the "Cycle Circle" on N. Plum Street in Lancaster. I have been working out on our stationary recumbent bicycle at home and I thought that I was doing well... Not as well as I thought, see the following FB Post...

Facebook Post

"I have set a goal for myself... To ride a bicycle by Spring. I've been
slowly working on our indoor stationary recumbent bike... a little at a
time. So, today I took a chance to see if I could flex my left knee well
enough to make a full rotation. I worked extremely hard over the past
month, but I figured out today that I truly am not ready and need more
work.
I have committed myself to succeed by Spring because I've
already purchased a trail bike at the "Cycle Circle". I must move my
seat a bit closer towards the handle bars on the stationary recumbent
bike... a little bit at a time to reach my rotation goal. Wish me luck
or I'll have a really nice bike for sale come June 2015."

I have been practicing my gear shift changing on my new Mustang over the past two weeks. I am averaging about 20.5 mpg driving the river hills in Southern Lancaster County... Along Rt. 272 and 372 (Holtwood Road). I even took Zach over to a local parking lot and had him try his hand at shifting gears yesterday afternoon... What a funny experience that was. It only took us about five attempts before he figured out how not to stall the engine going into first gear. But once he got moving, he did pretty well in changing into the upper gears. I made him stop and start quite often so that he would get the feel for the clutch. It will take him quite some time before he is comfortable and safe to drive on the main streets.

I am seriously thinking of selling my G3 in the Spring. I may be asking about $12,000 for it. I just placed brand new batteries in it this past season and rarely used it due to the low water conditions. But I will take the next few months to make my final decision... It seems that I get out fewer and fewer times over the past three years since my knee was replaced. I know that my fishing partners have found other interests in their lives and I understand completely... I'm getting old and it's not as fun fishing with an old geezer like me...

I do have an adventure approaching this coming January 2015. The "Lancaster Area Judo" Club has asked me to help them as they start up their new club. Although I am very limited in what I can do physically, I believe that I can still instruct able-bodied individuals and share my background knowledge with those competing in Judo. At one point in my Judo career, I was a Nidam (2nd Degree Black Belt), an owner of my own Judo Club (The Academy of Kodokan Judo), and a regional referee who refereed in a National Event at the age of twenty-two years old... I was the youngest referee at that National Tournament. I refereed several matches that included Olympians like Tommy Martin, etc.
p.s. Please, if you can find it in your heart, to keep the family of the 17 year old missing on the Susquehanna River, Medard Kowalski, in your daily prayers. Medard has been missing since he went out in his canoe to hunt on December 2, 2014. God bless and help the searchers find him soon.

Well here we are just two days away from Christmas and I was in touch yesterday with my good friend and fishing partner, Josh Kreider. Josh was driving through Virginia in the rain and heading south. He will be home in time for Christmas Day... Yeah!

Josh sent me a couple of updated pictures of his Rock Proof Jet Rig that is currently being built. Check out how far along the manufacturing has come...

I can really appreciate the poly sides that Josh is having placed on his new rig. He is also adding the Minn Kota Talons for an anchoring system. The only dent I have on the sides of my G3 jet rig could have been prevented by the poly sides... The dent happened when Pete Hanford and I were passing slowly through a rock chute and we "bumped" into a small boulder... In fact, we didn't even take notice of the dent until we trailered the boat and wondered where it had come from... Thinking back from our day on the water, that slight bump was the only place that the dent could have possibly come from... Poly would have prevented that dent, for sure.

In order to fix a dent like that, the aluminum worker would have to get inside the hull and place pressure outward as it is being repaired. We tried to fill it in with aluminum welding but it only absorbed the aluminum and barely fixed it... In fact, it is still somewhat visible.

Josh told me that his rig is just about ready to go into the paint shop. He plans to have the hull painted black. The rig will be ready for the motor mounting sometime in mid-January. This is a good time for the motor work to be done because it is right before the outdoor shows and the major sales push. Lakeside Marine in Harrisburg, Pa. will be doing the motor mounting and running all the wiring.

As December 2014 comes to an end, I will have passed a year in time since my last surgical procedure... That's right, folks! It's been over a year since I had my spinal fusion... Of course, I had to go through several months of Physical Therapy afterward and into the 2014 year.

I am so happy that my health has been holding up. I exercise every night for a few minutes on the recumbent bicycle building strength and flexibility. My plan is to be ready for this coming Spring 2015 to be able to ride my new Sun bicycle... I even bought a Thule bike rack to haul my bicycle to the new Safe Harbor Riding Trail. An alumni basketball player told me that his father was involved in it's development and that the trail is only 1% grade! That is almost entirely flat... Good for someone in my shape... LOL!

This coming Christmas Day will be my 60th birthday. My wife, Julie, wanted to celebrate not only my birthday, but also my retirement that was 8 years ago... LOL! So, this week, we traveled north to Lititz, Pa. and Keller Bros. Ford to check out the brand new 2015 Mustangs.

The first Mustang that I test drove off the lot was the 2.3 L Eco-Boost Mustang... Although it had great pick up and go, it just wasn't the muscle car I was desiring. The second Mustang that I test drove was the winner... A 5.0 GT Mustang "50th Anniversary Edition", premium package. Now for us to be in the ballpark we had to make sure that we were going to get a good, no... great deal with the trade-in of our 2014 Escape Eco-Boost... And we did!

We worked out the finance and got the car through PNC at 2.4% which is much better than the 2.9% being offered by Ford Leasing. We took out loan out for 63 months and added the available TST package. TST is added protection to the exterior and interior of the vehicle. There is no need to wax this Teflon surface placed on my new Mustang.

The leather interior also had the TST package added... Beautiful!

Take a look at my Competition Orange 2015 5.0 GT Mustang "50th Anniversary Edition"...

Pretty Cool, huh?

I now have several things that need to be taken care over the next few weeks. Keller Bros. is checking into the "50th Anniversary Edition" floor mats that were indicated on the "Sticker". Our passenger back LED lights were not working correctly. And the glove compartment had a clip missing that held it snugly in place. Nothing seriously wrong, but things that need to be taken care of on a new vehicle... Of course.

Another nice thing that will be happening within the next month, January 2015, is that I will be assisting the development of a new Lancaster Judo Club at Formula Fitness in Lancaster, Pa. A fellow Judoka, Joel Bragg, contacted me last month and asked if I would be willing to help them start up the club and I said, "Yes!" So, stay tune for some great pics from the judo club in the near future.

Keep in mind, that authorities are still searching for a 17 year old male who went hunting out of Market Street Launch, New Cumberland. They found several items, but not the missing hunter/boater. He ventured out in a canoe... Please say a prayer for his family as they continue to search for their loved one.

Josh Kreider and his buddy, "Squirrel", were able to hit the Susquehanna River below the Harrisburg, Pa. area once again after Thanksgiving Day 2014... They fished both Friday, November 28 and Saturday, November 29, 2014... and boy was it cold.

Josh sent me a pic from Saturday of his rod guides that were frozen. Check this out... Time to break out the silcone!

Josh reported that both days were cold and windy. The water temperature was running between 39 and 40 degrees. The river depth at the NOAA gauge in Harrisburg, Pa. read 4.1' on both days. The river level did come up today to 4.2'... There most likely is snow melt running into the river causing this slight rise (1.2").

The two bigger fish came on Friday, November 28...

A couple of weeks ago, my very good friend and fellow angler, John Williams, went shoreline fishing on the Susquehanna River at Long Level, Pa. John sent me several pictures of the smallmouth bass he was able to pull from the 38 degree waters.

I wanted to make sure that I shared his photos with you here at "Fishing With Dad"... Enjoy!
It certainly appeared that the "jerkbait" was the lure of choice by these smallmouth!

I hope all those who visit "Fishing With Dad" had a fantastic "Thanksgiving Day" feast. I spent the day at my nephew's home with his family and the extended Boyd Family. We had a lot of great food that was shared by each family in attendance. Before we sat down to partake in the turkey and ham feast, we were able to "SKYPE" with my nephew and his family who live in Las Vegas, Nevada.

What a great Thanksgiving Day and a big "THANK YOU" to John for sharing these smallmouth pictures from Long Level, Pa.
Another New Bicycle For Dad! (11/25/2014)Hello Folks...

Back in 1972, while working at my first job as a bus boy for Howard Johnson's, I had saved up enough money to buy myself a brand new 10-Speed bicycle. My brother's friend, Daryl Cluck, took me to a bike dealer in Ephrata, Pa. and I bought myself a brand new 10-Speed CCM, baby blue paint job road cycle.

I rode that bike everywhere. It came with me when I moved out of my home in 1974 and I used it to drive on nice days from Manor House Apartments to Millersville University and my classes. I even rode it to Ocean City, N.J from Lancaster, Pa... 131.4 miles! Thank goodness we had a friend there who gave us a lift back home. There's a big difference between driving into New Jersey and to driving back into Pennsylvania. New Jersey has a lot more flat terrain compared to Pennsylvania.

I owned that CCM 10-Speed cycle until I moved into my home here in Willow Street back in 1988. Some time in the early '90s, I sold that charming 10-Speed cycle of mine and I've never owned a bicycle since! Not until TODAY... It's been close to twenty-five years.

This is my special 60th birthday gift from my family. I decided to go to Tom Pod at the "Cycle Circle" in Lancaster, Pa. Tom has been in the bicycle business for close to thirty years and even trained as a custom bicycle builder... Cool Beans. I chose Tom because of all the fantastic reviews I read about him by locals who rated his abilities and shop as tops. I don't think a single article I read regarding Tom Pod had a negative overtone to it... Not a single one.

It turned out that Tom knew Daryl, the fellow who helped me select my very first 10-Speed Street Cycle. Tom was close friends with Daryl's younger brother, Denny. But since that day back in 1972, I now have major difference due to the many surgeries I have had (hips, left knee, and fused back)... I have very limited flexion and extension in my left knee. Tom suggested an easier "step-thru" bicycle made by "Sun"... I tested a 7-Speed and a 21-Speed. I decided on the 21-Speed due to the many hills (small and big) down here in Willow Street, Pa.

Check out the pictures I took this evening when I got home...

I only learned tonight that we lost a childhood friend of ours, Steve Doman. He was so tough and yet gentle... He was the middle-linebacker for the JP McCaskey Class of 1973 football team. Please take a minute and read Steve's obituary and say a prayer for him...

It was only 19 degrees this past Saturday morning and my good fishing partner Josh Kreider decided it would be a great day to take his buddy "Squirrel" out onto the Susquehanna River for "Squirrel's" very first fishing adventure on the river... LOL! I can say one thing for "Squirrel"... He was absolutely smart enough to dress warm for such a very, very cold morning on the icy river.

There was a strong south breeze blowing across the water temperature causing the river water to be a cold 36-37 degrees! In fact, there were several launches that were totally frozen in and prevented Josh and "Squirrel" from launching further upriver. Josh and "Squirrel" finally found that the "Long Level Launch" on the York County side of the river was opened enough to launch from. The fish they caught came to hand from a short 50 - 100 yd stretch on the west shoreline.

Everything was slowed down... The best lure of the day was a "black and blue hair jig" tossed into an 11 to 12' channel. There was ice floats coming down the river throughout their outing...

Check out these fantastic smallmouth with all their beautiful markings. The first "picture" fish that "Squirrel " caught on this cold was a 19.25" and his second fish was 17.50". Josh's fish was a nice 18" fish and "Squirrel's" final fish pic is a 18" smallie...

p.s. Today, Monday, November 24, 2014 the air temperature rose to 70 degrees. Compare that to a freezing 19 degrees we had here on Saturday. The National Weather Service is calling for Winter Snow Storm on Wednesday, November 26, 2014. There is a predicted 3" to 6" of snowfall on the day before Thanksgiving and the Number #1 traveling day of the entire year. I hope it is safe to drive.

Buffalo, N.Y. area had over 7' of snow last Monday (11/17/14) and Tuesday (11/18/14) from an unusual "Lake Effect" snow. The weather service was concerned that with today's warming trend that the general Buffalo. N.Y. area will be threatened with mass flooding. The Monday night football game between the Buffalo Bills and the N.Y. Jets for tonight has been moved to the Detroit Lion's stadium... I had a young adult friend of mine at church, who, by the way, is a Buffalo Bill's fan, that he was upset that the local Detroit Lions' fans encouraged attendees to wear Jet Green... This upset him because he said that when the Saints had their disaster from Hurricane Katrina, no one was encouraging other teams' fans to wear clothing against the Saints. What really upset him, by Saturday evening, there were 10 people who lost their lives during this terrible snow storm... No mention was made by those Detroit Fans to pray for the families of the lost loved ones. I told him that sports fans will do just about anything in the world to harass their competitors. They'll even stoop so low as to encourage others to cheer against the Buffalo Bills after a natural storm hit their home area.dadTBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01432516209408960063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2601396230790890761.post-105913049990379782014-11-17T15:09:00.005-05:002014-11-17T15:09:43.034-05:00Josh Kreider's Weekend of Susquehanna River Fishing (11/17/14)Hello Folks,

I was unable to hit the river this past weekend, but my good friend and fishing partner, Josh Kreider, was able to get out on both Saturday (11/15/14) and Sunday (11/16/14). He got on the river at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with Nate Kepp and Nate's Duracraft Jet Rig. Nate is the young man who we ran into at the Steelton Launch a last weekend. Josh got on the water with John Williams on Sunday. John Williams may be purchasing Josh's G3 as soon as Josh puts it up for sale. John wanted to take a run in the G3 and Josh planned to take him out this past weekend.

Saturday seemed to be a bit tougher day on the water for Josh and Nate. Nate's equipment recorded the water temperature as 39-40 degrees. By Sunday, the water temperature ros overnight and was sitting at 42-43 degrees. It's better to hit the water in the Fall when it is on the rise rather than the drop.

Josh mentioned that the jerkbait seemed to be the most productive lure... Pointers and Megabass (John Williams). Josh also sent me several pictures... A couple of pictures from Sunday's outing was John William's 20.25" smallmouth off a Megabass. Good job, guys!
Josh mentioned that the bigger smallmouth were caught behind ledges and in the troughs. As you can see, there are black markings on several of the above bass. Fall and colder water temperatures tend to bring on the markings. When we were fishing throughout the summer, we still caught some bass with the black markings, but not as many ratio-wise as we are now.
Thanks to Josh Kreider, Nate Kepp, and John Williams for allowing me to share pictures from their past weekend fishing adventures. This particular area where they were fishing does not hold as many wintering bass as Fort Hunter does and in my opinion, is bit more challenging for anglers to catch smallmouth in the 20+ inch range.

This area is also not as confined as Fort Hunter and is not as crowded. It's not that I don't like fishing "The Community Hole" at Fort Hunter among the masses. But I definitely enjoy the Fall and Winter challenges that certain areas provide. Despite what some may tell you, there ARE larger fish in those areas, but maybe not as plentiful.

For example, a few years ago, after spending two hours on Lake Aldred (Between Safe Harbor and Holtwood Dams) without a single bite, the bass started to turn on and I was able to pick up back-to-back 20+ inchers... Most Susquehanna River anglers will admit that Lake Aldred is definitely a challenging section of the Susquehanna River and not their #1 Choice of fishing spot... LOL!
This past week, while out fishing with Jeff B (CHRGD), he told me that he sometimes will go back over old pics that he has saved from our past fishing adventures. Penny asked him what he was laughing about and he told her "I was looking at some of the old pics Tommy and I took while out fishing". :)

I also get a kick out of those old pics and adventures. Some I will never forget... for sure!dadTBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01432516209408960063noreply@blogger.com
